Pencils of Promise

The PTA Social Action committee has identified a wonderful end of year project for Red Oak School, and they have partnered with the Third Grade to get the message out! Third grade ambassadors, Ari, Max, and Morgan came to our classroom to talk about Pencils of Promise and how our kids can help kids in other parts of the world!
Pencils of Promise is a nonprofit organization that builds schools in less fortunate communities around the world. Every Red Oak student has the opportunity to create a page for a book that is being put together to send to one of the PoP’s schools. Students can create a picture, a story, or a poem about school. Fourth graders are starting their page in class, and can finish  at home. Also, a collection jar is in our classroom for any money donations.
Please see the flyer that was sent home today for more details.

Script Writing

The students have been continuing their national park research and are almost ready to start creating their iMovies! The last step in the process is writing a script! Each pair is working together to create a script as if they are “park rangers” guiding tourists through the park! Students are using the facts that they found to develop a written script that they will read into a microphone to narrate their iMovie. We can’t wait to see the national park projects come to life! :)

Learning Long Division!

light bulb

In math, we are working hard as we are learning long division. Daddy, Mommy, Sister, Brother (D-M-S-B) helps us remember the steps: divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down or bring up. These are the division steps we are practicing. We are also using grid paper to help us line up our numbers, so that our computation is accurate. It was wonderful to watch students acting as teacher helpers as they were helping others with division. All our hard work is causing us to light up the bulb! Check out our fun pictures below:

The Seven Natural Wonders of the World!

Yeah! Sydney and Owen did extra credit by researching the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Thank you for sharing with us the seven wonders that were created by Mother Nature.

Thank you Lieutenant Andrews!

Lieutenant Andrews, Sydney’s dad has been in the Navy for almost 20 years. He explained to my class and Miss VanArsdale’s that he has worked as a mechanic on many ships. The U.S.S. Chancellorville, is one ship the Lieutenant has been on, and it’s larger than Red Oak. Lieutenant Andrews also explained to us that he is like a principal of a school, because he is in charge of training new sailors to work on ships. In addition, he teaches sailors to fight fires. Thank you for visiting us and for protecting and serving our country!

Thank you Letters

We practiced writing a letter. The students wrote thank you notes to “Goldman Sachs Gives,” which is the charity that donated money to our school to fund our Month of the Military Child activities. We are practicing the format of a letter, including the date, greeting, body paragraphs, and closing. The children enjoyed typing their letters into a Google doc using their student Gmail accounts.

Month of the Military Child Assembly

"Your're a grand old flag...you're a high flying flag."

We had a patriotic and touching assembly today to honor our military students and families.  We sang songs, watched a movie honoring our Red Oak military heros – both past and present, and we learned about the pledge and what it means. Thank you Sydney, Kaylee, Alexa, and Brian for speaking at the assembly. Highland Park’s Mayor Nancy R. Rotering, stopped by and gave a speech too!  All and all it was a wonderful assembly, and it made us all feel proud to be Americans!

The Invisible String

This week, Red Oak students read a book called The Invisible String. This book explains that all people are connected to their loved ones by an “invisible string” that holds on tight to our hearts! When our family members or friends are far away, we can tug on the string, and they will know we are thinking about them. We talked about how it feels to be away from someone you love. Following our read aloud, we did a “web” activity where we passed around a ball of string. After rolling the string to a classmate, each student shared something that the two of them have in common. Our string made it all the way around the circle and created a beautiful woven web! Afterwards, we made bracelets out of our string to show that we are all connected in some way! :)
