All fifth grade students at Braeside will take the 5th to 6th grade math placement assessments this week. Both assessments will be taken in students’ homeroom classes. The dates and times of the assessments are as follows:
Wednesday, April, 11 from 1:45-2:45 p.m. – Math Inventory Assessment
Thursday, April 12 from 2:15-2:45 p.m. – Illinois Math League Contest
We would appreciate it greatly if you would avoid picking your child up early either of the next two days while we are administering these district assessments. Thank you!
Recently I found an incredible math resource that I introduced to our math class today. The website is called Khan Academy. It offers a variety of self-paced tutorials for math concepts (It also has many science and humanities videos as well!). As you progress through the lessons you earn points, achievements and badges. You can even learn about NEW math concepts that we don’t cover in fifth grade (all the way to college level!). My math class has signed up to use the site, but I wanted to give my homeroom the opportunity to try it out as well. Below are the steps to sign up. Let me know what you think!
Type in your school email address and password (don’t forget to include @students.nssd112.org in your email address)
Click on Allow Access on the next screen to let the Khan Academy website use your email address as your new login.
AT THIS POINT YOU ARE SIGNED IN…NOW YOU NEED TO ADD ME AS YOUR “COACH”
Click on your name at the top of the screen.
Click on coaches on the far left of the screen.
Type in MY email address (clucci@nssd112.org) and click Add Coach
AT THIS POINT IT IS TIME TO LEARN!
Get started practicing by clicking on Practice at the top of the screen
You will now see a map of the “math universe” with a variety of topics to choose from
The lessons in green are good starter lessons, but you are welcome to try any other lessons.
Click on the lesson to begin. If you understand the concept, you can quickly answer the questions given. If you are struggling or encounter new material, use the hint option or watch the videos found on that page.
On Friday we kicked off our annual read-a-thon. During the next month our student community competes to see which school can do the most reading outside of the school day. The money that students raise during this time helps to fund classroom enrichment tools and projects. Our ActivExpressions are a direct result of funding from the 112 Foundation! Students are not required to fundraise, but are required to take part in their normal reading activities. Student will document all of their reading on the iRead for 112 Foundation record sheet. Please note that we are tallying minutes read and NOT pages read. If you need another form, you can get one from the 112 Foundation website.
Students, please remember that the expectation is to read for a minimum of 30 minutes per night. Happy reading!
On Thursday, March 22nd, Newbery and Caldecott-award winner children’s author and illustrator, Kevin Henkes, will be visiting Braeside’s first and second grade students. While Mr. Henkes is only able to meet with those two grade levels, all students have the opportunity to purchase one of his books, which he will personalize and autograph on the day of his visit!
To learn more about Kevin Henkes, you can visit his website here: www.kevinhenkes.com
The past two Mondays the Braeside fifth graders have had the privilege of visits from a jazz group called the American Songbook Quartet! They not only showed us video footage of famous jazz musicians, but they also performed live for us on their bass, drums, piano, and jazz vocals. Last week we were treated to music by Duke Ellington, learning about his influence on not only jazz but many other genres of music. Today’s focus was on George and Ira Gershwin. The quartet played music composed by the Gershwins and taught us about the influence they have had over generations of musicians. We look forward to a blues focus next week!
Spring conferences are just around the corner! Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, March 14 through Friday, March 16.
