Diversity Assembly

Braeside was visited by Highland Park High School senior Ariel Small this morning. He spoke about living with Tourette Syndrome. He shared the challenges he has faced and his experiences with being different. He passed along his message about how we can all learn from and be more understanding of each other’s differences. Ariel is an Illinois Youth Ambassador for the Tourette Syndrome Association. I would encourage all of the students in 5L to continue discussing what they learned today at home with their families!

Valentine’s Day Boxes

Make Your Own Valentine’s Day Box!

Your assignment for Tuesday, February 14th is to make your own Valentine’s Day box.  There is a catch though.  You need to make a box that does not have your name on it, but gives clues to your classmates that it is yours.  Your clues can be pictures of things you like to do, books you like to read, things in which you are interested, etc.  You can use a shoebox, empty tissue box, or something about that size.  It needs to have an opening on the top for your classmates to drop in their Valentines for you. Your box needs to be completed and at school on Tuesday, February 14,  for our Valentine’s Day party.  Be creative and have fun!

Also, you can bring Valentines to hand out to your classmates on Monday as long as you have one for everyone in class.

Mad Science: Matter of Fact

Mad Science visited this morning to talk about matter, which we are studying in the classroom right now. The students assembled different types of molecules and created a physical and chemical change in order to make their own silly putty!

Colonial Billboards

In an effort to learn about some of the first colonies, the students in 5L got together in groups and created billboards for six different colonies. The purpose of their billboards?… to generate interest for settlement in their colonies of course! Take a look as the students used their knowledge of the colonies and colonial regions along with their creativity to create very appealing billboards!

Weather Almanac

5L has been working hard to create an online weather almanac. Each student selected a topic about which they have done research and are currently writing and finding images. Please take a moment to browse our weather almanac to see what the students are learning. All students will have their information complete and posted by the end of this week!

Explorer Presentations

Our explorer groups presented their research findings this morning!  Each group created a Prezi to share their information with the class. The groups demonstrated their flair for creativity and unique presentation styles while clearly informing the rest of our class about the explorer they studied. The students worked extremely hard and should all be very proud of the terrific work they did!

You can view each group’s Prezi on the newly created Explorer Presentations page to your right. Please also check out the pictures of the students presenting in our Flickr Photo Gallery!
