Sing, Say, Move, Play…

Although this has nothing to do with music, it is simply the cutest thing ever and I just had to share it with all my fellow cat lovers! Enjoy!!!
(In case they are sleeping, rewind to a more “active” scene!)

Third graders were given the assignment of teaching someone older than them how to play Hot Cross Buns on recorder. Upon completion of the recorder lesson, both recorder “teacher” (the 3rd grader!) and the “student” should fill out the reflection sheet on the back of the lesson plan or using the Google form below. All lessons and reflections need to be completed by Wednesday, May 2.
If you fill out the online form you don’t need to bring anything back to school–if you fill out the hard copy, please return to Mrs. Lucci by May 2. Also, if the form is not showing up below, try refreshing your page…
Happy playing! This is meant to be an enjoyable and eye-opening experience for both third grader and whomever they select to teach! Feel free to leave a comment using the comment box at the very bottom of the blog to share your experiences with other teacher/student pairs! (When you submit your Google form it will only be visible for Mrs. Lucci so she can track who has completed the assignment. But if you write a comment, others can read about your experience too!)

Last week the 4th grade students performed a West African trickster tale called Zomo the Rabbit. The performance came as a cultural connection to this year’s Kids Who Care fundraiser, Generosity Water. In just 4 days during our Giving to Give spirit week, we raised $4,700 to build a well in Ghana, Africa! Now the children of a village will be able to go to school instead of having to walk miles and miles each day to bring water to their families.
Almost all the music in the show comes from Africa, and it reminds us that while our lives may be different from others around the world, music and dance are important parts of all cultures. The opening song is called “Sansa Kroma” and is a very popular childrens song in Ghana. Sansa is a hawk, and the meaning of this song reminds children that if something were to happen to their parents and they died, the children would not be orphans, but instead would be cared for by others in the village. We sing “Eh Soom Boo“–a Nigerian boating song–while Zomo visits the sea. During scene 4 while Zomo is tricking Leopard into slipping down the hill so he hits the rock and his tooth will pop out, the fourth graders sing a rock passing game from Ghana called “Obwasimisa“–the translation means, “the rock has crushed my hand, Grandma.” The reason kids play rock passing games in Ghana is because sticks and rocks are easily found in their villages–quite a different pastime from those we’re used to here in the United States. Then our final piece is a Swahili blessing called “Bwana Awabariki“.
Also, as you watch, it’s fun to note that the narrators of the performance worked to adapt Gerald McDermott’s version of this traditional story and wrote their own script. And because our school was celebrating “Ghana Build a Well Day” everyone was wearing the colors of the Ghana flag.
Please enjoy! You are in for a real treat. ![]()
