This is how to extend beyond literature!

Upon reading “Lunch Money” by Andrew Clements in one of our guided reading groups, Abby, Georgie, Jordyn and Stefanie were inspired to bring fiction to life. Instead of selling comic books like the characters in the story, the girls decided on creating their own short stories and poems to sell. One of the lessons and themes that the students identified in “Lunch Money” is money isn’t everything, therefore the girls insisted their profits go to the American Cancer Society and the 5th grade class gift. I applaud these girls for their vision, creativity and hard work!

This literature extension activity is for students in Mrs. Swanson’s class. Please encourage your child to support our fellow classmates in their creative writing endeavors and charitable cause! Items in this “class store” will be available on the same day as the school store over recess time. This is yet another reason why Red Oak Rocks!

Blogger of the Week of 4/23

See below for pictures of our class connecting through a piece of string, as inspired by the book “The Invisible String.” Also, we were privileged to have two students’ dads talk to our class about their work in the military that spanned from labor on huge ship engines to emergency communications.

Monday – Today we had a lot of fun in gym. Tomorrow, we will have an early release. (Lily)

Tuesday -  Today we learned algebra and adverbs. (Morgan)

Wednesday –  I liked when we read “The Invisible String” and then connected the whole class together by a piece of string. (Kirheem)

Thursday - Today was really fun because in math we got to learn something new. I also liked gym when we played running bases. (Molly)

Friday  - Today Dads’ in the military came and showed us cool things! (Aaron)
