“Make a Difference” Field Trip Highlights, 1/26

This week fourth grade had an amazing field trip to the The Miller Family Youth Exhibition, Make a Difference at the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center.  In small groups, students explored a variety of interactive exhibits that focused on making a difference.  Students immersed themselves in a variety of different scenarios.  Special thanks to Mrs. Weisman for volunteering as a chaperone. I tried to capture as many moments as I could.  After the trip, students also had the opportunity to reflect in their journals, and I included some of their powerful words below…

“On this field trip I learned a lot. Just remember: You make the difference. One person can change the world.”

“You should be an upstander and help a friend. Just like using our shadows to help the frog.”

“I like how we could add our voice and face and say to the bully what we felt and we could practice helping people.”

“A Bystander is not helping and just watching. An upstander is helping to solve the problem… I think I’m not  or try not to be a bystander. And be an upstander instead.”

“I also learned that everyone is special and unique in their own ways.”

“We also learned to not treat people of how they look on the outside, but treat them by their inside. All of the things we learned today is going to make me a better person.”

“Whenever I see ANYONE get bullied, I will help them.”

“We made an oath saying three things we promised to do. My experience in this part of the exhibit was amazing.”

“I learned that everyone can make a difference no matter how small or big.”

“I also learned that to make the world a better place, all you have to do is something little and they all add up to make something huge.”

“Prejudice means when other thing they’re better than someone because they are different.”

“Try to remember any time is the right time to make a difference.”

“Bullying is the wrong thing to do. If you see bullying happening, don’t be a bystander. Be an upstander.”

“Make a change and stop bullying.”

“We used our shadows to control the game! In the game, a frog was being bullied by another frog!”

My students continuously impress me, and today I was blown away with their ability to reflect and investment in the exhibits.  They took so much from this field trip, and I hope they went home and shared with you their experience and what they learned.

Also, thank you, families, who came out to Family Skate Night. It was a blast skating with the kids (even though they could skate circles around me, literally).  It’s always fun to bond with the kids outside of the classroom.

Have a great weekend!

Stay Warm,
